This is a true story of a courageous young Japanese girl called Sadako. She became sick with leukaemia after the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.

Recalling a Japanese legend that if a sick person folds one thousand cranes, God would make them healthy again, Sadako set about this task in the hospital where she was being treated. She became weaker and weaker with the treatment she was receiving for the leukaemia, as the cancer took hold of her body. Near the end it was taking all her effort just to fold and make one or two cranes a day, but she never gave up in her task and never lost hope that she would one day achieve her goal.

In the end she died before completing her task, but has become a modern day heroine to the children of Japan. They even erected a statue to her in Hiroshima Peace Park with the inscription "This is our cry, this is our prayer, peace in this world". There is also a place for people who visit the statue to add a paper crane to help Sadako achieve her goal.
